All  pets should be looked after and deserve to have not just good food and a nice home, but to be kept clean. Pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs cannot clean themselves, that is why they need the help of humans.

We offer services which help to keep your guinea pig in tip top condition.

You will find more information about our services on this page. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Rabbits & Guinea Pigs Claws Clip.

Rabbits and guinea pigs can suffer from foot problems.  Their claws need to be clipped regularly, on average every three to four weeks.  If their claws become too long, this can lead to pain and discomfort.  It is important to check their feet for signs of fungal infections, overgrown claws, etc.

Cleaning Guinea Pigs Ears.

Guinea pigs ears should be relatively clean. Keeping their ears clean and wax free will help to avoid ear problems. Ear infections (head tilt), fungal infections (crust on edges of ears) or inflamation may result from dirty ears. We recomended the use of antiparasitic treatments, Oticlens and mineral oils for cleaning guinea pig's ears.

Generally, guinea pigs will keep themselves clean, but bathing your guinea pig every 3-4 months will help to keep their fur and skin healthy, free of grease and dirt. The shampoos that we use are specially designed to be kind to your guinea's skin and help prevent fungal and parasitic infestations.

Each shampoo we use is based on ingredients derived from plants, which are kinder to the skin. No chemicals or detergents are used. The shampoos contain the minimum amount of preservatives and any colour in the shampoo comes from pure essential oils. We have a selection of shampoos especially  designed for guinea pigs with skin problems. We also have shampoos for guinea pigs with long, flyaway hair, which helps to reduce tangling. These aromatherapy shampoos include Lavender, Lemon grass, Tea Tree and Patchouli,  all of which are kind and gentle to your guinea pig's skin.

Grooming Your Pet

Brushing your guinea pig with a soft baby brush or a metal greyhound comb will help remove some of the loose hair and lessen shedding. Daily brushing is especially important for long haired guinea pigs, as their hair can become knotted and this will irritate your pet.
Regularly grooming your bunny removes loose fur and helps keep their fur and skin in tip-top condition.  Grooming should be a pleasure for both the rabbit and its owner. By brushing weekly, the rabbit soon becomes accustomed to this activity and it makes heavier brushing during shedding, a more enjoyable and less stressful experience for both.

Eye injuries

The most common eye injury is the result of the guinea pig rooting around in the hay and getting poked in the eye by a piece of it. If you notice a guinea pig with a watering eye check the surface of the eye for any scoring. Obviously, also check at the same time to see if there is any foreign body in it. More often than not it is not until the eye goes opaque about a day after the injury that it is noticed and by this time the eye is well on the mend. A dab of Brolene eye ointment is recommend and the eye should be monitored for a few days of course.

Sometimes the eye can become very badly infected and bulge out of it's socket if it is not noticed and treated early. A huge ugly scab can form on it and it looks very inflamed. Even this can very effectively treated by antibiotic drops and injections. So long as the infection stays encapsulated within the eye ball and does not spread behind then the animal's life is not at hazard.

If the infection does get behind the eye then serious thought must be given to having the eye removed surgically, and very quickly indeed. The removal of an eye is the least risky of all operations. Everything depends of course on how quickly it is done or how far the infection has spread. Needless to say infections of this nature have to be dealt with by a vet.
